FAR 52.242-15 — Stop-Work Order
Allows the contracting officer to direct the contractor to stop all or any part of the work under a contract for up to 90 days.
When This Clause Applies
Required in supply, service, and R&D contracts. Construction has a separate Suspension of Work clause (FAR 52.242-14).
What This Means for Contractors
Contractor must stop work immediately and take action to minimize costs. If the stop-work is later canceled or expires without contract termination, contractor receives an equitable adjustment for the cost of stopping and restarting. If terminated, settles under Termination for Convenience.
Common Pitfalls
- 1Failing to document costs incurred during the stop-work period
- 2Continuing performance after receiving a stop-work order (costs not recoverable)
- 3Missing the equitable adjustment claim within the contractually-required window
