FAR 52.217-8 — Option to Extend Services
Allows the government to unilaterally extend service contracts for up to 6 months beyond the contract term to bridge gaps in follow-on award timing.
When This Clause Applies
Used as a backstop in service contracts where the government may need time to award a follow-on contract.
What This Means for Contractors
Government can extend services for up to 6 months at the rates and terms then in effect. Often used during recompete delays. Contractor must continue performance at existing terms.
Common Pitfalls
- 1Forgetting this clause exists — often invoked unexpectedly when a recompete slips
- 2Not preparing capacity to extend (key personnel may have rolled off)
- 3Treating extension as new business when it's the same contract
